The extrusion process improves the availability of nutrients in a ration. When feeding a product that has been extruded the horse can utilize a higher percentage of the the nutrients in the ration than if the ration is unprocessed or pelleted.
Extrusion is the process of heating a feed to a very high temperature and then exposing it to extreme pressure. This process disrupts the starch and fiber molecules in the ingredients which reduces the particle size and shape and increases the surface area. Since both enzymatic and microbial digestion depend on the amount of exposed surface area this allows more rapid and complete digestion of the ration. The transit time for feedstuffs to move through the digestive tract is limited therefore; more of it can be digested and absorbed in the time allowed.
The extrusion process can increase the digestibility of a ration to over 90%. The digestibility of products made by other processes depends on the type of grain and fiber sources and can range from less than 50% to more than 70%. Some programs with unprocessed grains and high fiber will be the least digestible at 50% or less. As more processing is used on the grain in a coarse feed, the digestibility may increase to 55 - 60% depending on the fiber sources. If a product is pelleted the digestibility may reach 70 - 75%; again depending on the fiber and grain sources.
Another aspect of extruded feed is the avaialability of nutrients other than energy. If the minerals and micronutrients are made available more quickly after the horse eats a meal, the more easily and quickly they are absorbed. This allows the horse to use a higher percent of all nutrients a product contains. This is why you can take a pelleted product and extrude it and the performance of a horse increases.
